Spectacular scenery and so much variety over the course of the 8 day trek, starting with 2 days in Landmannalaugar, where the weather was foul (and the Laugevegur route shut for a couple of days beacuse of it) but even so enoyed the thermal pools, the Green Valley and walk to Ljoti Pollur (Ugly Puddle) crater lake. VERY grateful for a warm, dry hut to sleep in – camping would have been dreadful.
Weather improved for the start of 4 days following the Laugevegur in the company of the awesome Frimann Ingvarsson who was our trek leader – his knowledge and experience of the area and all the hidden detours added so much to our enjoyment particularly of the geothermal area in the first couple of days. Definitely got the full experience.
The tretch from Alftavatn to Emstrur huts coincided with the sun coming out (factor 30 suncream time!) which stayed with us for the rest of our trip, so we had a balanced trip interms of the weather extremes!
Finished off with an epic walk from the end (or start if heading south to north) of the Laugevegur up to Modi crater on the slopes of Eyjafyatlajokull, where the 2010 eruption took place. The descent included “walking” (or more accurately slipping and sliding on backsides!) down a section of snow/ice sheet which will live long n the memory – Frimann’s expert advice gave us all the confidence to tackle this safely…but with a shot of adrenaline.
