Lake McBride Waterfall hike is perfect for people who only have an afternoon to spend in nature. The loop trail is only 2 miles long, so even if you are not in perfect shape or have health issues, you can still come and visit one of Iowa's hidden jewels. The loop goes along the shores of Iowa River and Coralville Lake, up to the waterfall that is spilling out of the Lake Macbride. This hike offers beautiful scenery and majestic sunsets from many points, so make sure to start the loop around two hours before sunset.
Passing the small town of Solon, you will find a tiny grass parking to your right. Across the road from the parking area, you'll see the entrance to the Lake Macbride Interpretive Trail. This loop has a path that divides and follows the shore of Coralville Lake, leading visitors towards the beach. Once you come to the beach, keep following the lakeshore until it turns into Iowa River, and go on towards Coralville Res Boat Ramp. The path is quite rocky, with only a few beach spots, so sturdy underwear is a must if you plan a visit.
On the way, you can take a break and have a picnic lunch by the river. After a short walk, you'll come at the boat ramp parking lot and see the path that leads to the waterfall. The wide falls spill out from Lake Macbride into Iowa River. On both sides, there are steep bluffs that you can climb and even cross the falls without getting soaked.
If you carry a hammock, you can hang it near the falls, or start going back and set up a camp along the Iowa River. Whatever thing you decide to do, the parking lot is at a reasonable distance, so you can always head back home.
