This was one of the Ninh Binh area's best things attractions. While Tam Coc was clogged with day-tripping Hanoi tourists, all jostling to climb the boats in the city center, Bich Dong was relatively peaceful and the temple was well integrated into the natural beauty of the area. The temple is set in three levels in the mountainside and you will have to climb some steep stairs to get to the top. Maybe not the best attraction for people with issues of mobility. It's not the most ornate or colorful temple you'll ever see, but that's the point-the beauty is provided by the surrounding mountains. It's just a 15-minute bike ride from Tam Coc, so there's really no reason not to visit there during your stay. Walking through the temple's three levels will not take more than an hour of your time, but you might spend the whole day cycling through the nearby rice fields. One thing to note: you will be directed to a covered parking area if you come by bicycle or motorcycle. If you leave your bike here, between 5,000 and 50,000 dong will be charged somewhere. On the contrary, grab a coffee from one of the cafes that are about 100 meters up the road. Leave here your bike and avoid the parking fee. If someone tries to charge you a pagoda entrance fee, it's just a local attempt to scam you. This is a religious site and the entrance fee is not applicable. However, as a sign of respect, as you would at any other temple in Southeast Asia, you should cover your knees and shoulders. It's not necessary, but it would show some sensitivity to culture.
