Surfer's Point off Figueroa Street includes one of the top surfing and windsurfing spots in California. This sandy beach is connected to the Ventura Pier by a landscaped promenade and the Omer Rains Bike Trail. Promenade Park commemorates the site of an ancient village of Chumash next to the beach. There are restrooms, showers, a spacious lawn and picnic tables and grills on the beach and park facilities.
There's also a reef break known as Ventura Overhead that breaks a quarter-mile offshore and only works with big winter swells. Experienced surfers wait for the winter swell - when it does show up, it's the best wave along the coast.
Parking can be tough, so come early if you want to park in the lot. Street parking was free for 24 minutes, so the tourist types can stroll to the beach, snap a photo, see how the break is (if they even know what that is), use the restroom and then move on.
