The people of Ocracoke say that if the world ended, they would hear about it three days later. This quiet beach village, which used to be a hot spot for many infamous pirates, is known for its locally owned shops, seafood restaurants, hotels, stunning beaches, and signature lighthouse.
Camping at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore offers access to some of the best beaches in North Carolina. The beach here is often empty, other than the scurrying ghost crabs and killdeer. During the day long stretches of beach can be seen in either direction. The light-colored sand is sandwiched between the dark blue water and the sand dunes topped with pathways, woven through long grass, leading to the camp. Looking out over the ocean one can sometimes see a group of porpoises or a dazzling pink sunrise. At night, if there are no clouds, an immense array of stars litter the sky. Even the Milky Way can appear on particularly dark nights.
The campsites are meant for RV and car camping, but don’t be afraid to leave the car in Swan Quarter or Hatteras and just take your bike on the ferry. Using your bike to get around the island is half the fun. A morning ride to the coffee shop followed by some pottery shopping and lounging on the beach will show you why no one visits Ocracoke just once. It’s a relaxing place to get away while still feeling a strong local community presence. The campground is well maintained and has facilities such as drinking water, flush toilets, showers, and grills. The mosquitoes can be very bad. Bug spray is a must. It is often very windy here, which can help with the mosquitoes, but increases the chances of rip currents. Be sure the water is safe before swimming.
